Itineraries : South Australia Discovery

  • Duration: 5 to 7 Days

Wineries, wildlife and the great Outback. Here are two alternatives that can be taken separately or clip together to make for a longer holiday.

Alternate 1

From Adelaide, head north to the Barossa Valley for the unique German atmosphere and great wineries. (Bit over an hour from Adelaide to the Valley, say Tanunda)

Accommodation suggestion: Barossa B & B

Head on up to the Clare Valley for some more wonderful wine country and heritage towns like Mintaro and Burra. (Tanunda to Burra, bit under an hour and a half)

Accommodation suggestion: Mintaro or Burra

To the rugged Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound. You can easily allow a couple of days here. (About 3 hours 20 driving time)

Accommodation suggestion: Wilpena Pound

Head back down to the Spencer Gulf to Port Pirie (about 2 hours 45 mins) Explore the Yorke Peninsula, making your way back up to Moonta.

Accommodation suggestion: Moonta

From Moonta to Adelaide it’s about a two hour drive.

Alternate 2

Head south from Adelaide to the Fleurieu Peninsula, through the McLaren Vale wine country to Victor Harbor. (1hr 30 mins)

Accommodation suggestion: Victor Harbor

Take the morning ferry across from Cape Jervis to Kangaroo Island. Allow at least 2 days – a day trip is far too rushed, especially if driving, rather than a coach tour which can ‘do’ the island in a day.

Accommodation suggestion: Kangaroo Island

Head back to the mainland and along the coast to Goolwa. (Cape Jervis to Goolwa about an hour 15 mins). Inland through Strathalbyn to Tailem Bend and head towards Keith and on to Naracoorte. Take in one of the caves and maybe the night bat observation. (Goolwa to Naracoorte, about 4 hours)

Accommodation suggestion: Naracoorte

If you liked the cave yesterday, you may want to explore another or head to Bool Lagoon Game Reserve on your way south. Pass through the Coonawarra wine district, Penola (of Mary McKillop fame), and on to Mount Gambier. (Naracoorte – Mt Gambier less than 1hr 30mins). Head towards the coast, through the pretty town of Robe to Kingston SE. (Mt Gambier to Kingston SE about 1 hr 45 mins).

Accommodation suggestion: Robe or Kingston SE

Continue up the coast, to Murray Bridge and on to Mount Barker and the Adelaide Hills before heading down to Adelaide. (Kingston SE to Adelaide, around 3 hours)
