Itineraries : Tasmania Discovery
To answer to a question we’re sometimes asked – yes, you can ‘do’ the whole of Tasmania in 7 days, but it is a bit rushed – 10 days is great and 7 days is comfortable, but in 7, here’s what you’re looking at in driving time between suggested overnight stops. Hobart to Port Arthur (1 hour), Port Arthur to Coles Bay (2 hrs 15 mins), Coles Bay to Launceston (2 hours), Launceston to Cradle Mountain (1 hr 45 mins), Cradle Mountain to Strahan (1 hr 45 mins), Strahan to Hobart (3 hrs 30 mins), and this allows a day either side for Hobart or another day en route.
At a glance, this looks so easy with little travelling but, really, there’s so much to see and do along the way. While we’ve said the following suggested itinerary can work for 7 days, we’ve extended it to 10 here, allowing for a couple of nights in certain spots, so really there are a couple of itineraries in one.
Keep in mind that it’s less than two and a half hours from Hobart to Launceston, so you can end this trip anywhere along the route or look at starting in Hobart and ending in Launceston.
Day 1: Hobart
Day 2: From Hobart, head north to Richmond, at least a couple of hours here, then on to Port Arthur. Overnight here and take in the Ghost Tour.
Days 3+4: Head up the coast to Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park. Allow 2 nights here to explore the park and gems like Wineglass Bay.
Day 5: Inland through pretty towns like Ross and Campbell Town to Launceston. Overnight Launceston
Days 6+7: To Cradle Mountain National Park. Again – settle in and enjoy the spectacular scenery and wildlife.
Days 8+9: To Queenstown and on to Strahan. Another two nights here for Strahan and the South West Wilderness.
Day 10: To Hobart.
And we still haven’t allowed for the delightful Huon Valley! The Valley and Bruny Island could be an alternative to the South West Wilderness.
