South Australia : South Australia Accommodation
Adelaide
As with other cities, I like to stay in the heart of Adelaide, within walking distance to the sights, attractions and restaurants (unless, of course, I’m staying with my sister at Wynn Vale). The Adelaide Hyatt Regency on North Terrace is a posh pub overlooking the Torrens River with all the facilities you’d expect from a Hyatt, handy to the casino, tourist attractions, Hindley Street for nightlife, Gouger Street for dining out and Rundle Mall for shopping. My suggestion for a self-contained, well-appointed apartment stay would be the Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury. Or for a budget option on North Terrace, there’s the Adelaide Riviera Motel and Function Centre.
Barossa & Clare Valleys
To enjoy the ambience and heritage of the wineries, I like B & B and cottage style accommodation and they are in abundance in these regions. A couple of examples - in the Barossa, Merlot Cottage - and at Auburn in the Clare Valley, Wild Olive Cottage (a stunning hideaway for one couple at a time). Quince Cottage and Dennis Cottage are also delightful. And, close to the city, in the Adelaide Hills, there are a number of charming cottages for weekend escapes.
Flinders Ranges
As a base in The Flinders Ranges, Wilpena Pound has something for everyone from camping and caravan grounds to motel style units to chalets and self-contained deluxe accommodation (including units for disabled travellers). Prices range from $16 a night for an un-powered campsite ($22 for power) to around $185 per night. There’s a swimming pool, restaurant, bottle shop and supermarket.
Kangaroo Island
There’s a range of accommodation from the lighthouse at one end of the island, to resort accommodation like Kangaroo Island Seafront at Penneshaw, and Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat at Kingscote at the other end. Another In Kingscote I like, is the friendly reception and quality of the 4 and a half star Acacia Apartments. There are 1 and 2 bedroom self-contained apartments (and honeymoon and executive suites), an indoor heated pool and spa and BBQ facilities. The owners have excellent local knowledge and are happy to drop you into town for a restaurant meal. A little known option here is the cottage they own up the hill - it really is home away from home with separate bedrooms, kitchen, patio etc and furnishings like you’d expect dropping in to Aunt Florence’s - we were so at home there we even found ourselves watering the garden at dusk while enjoying a dry white wine. Another lovely property is Seascape on Emu Bay.
Inland and Other Coast
There are some very interesting accommodation options throughout the state (like the Old Gaol in Mount Gambier). When visiting the World Heritage Limestone Caves at Naracoorte, we liked the William Macintosh Motel just out of town. Owned by people who like to party it is also quiet (away from the bar) and spacious (one bedroom and motel style) with a nice restaurant. In Victor Harbour, a good well-priced pub option is The Anchorage Hotel. There are lots of B & Bs through McLaren Vale on the Fleurieu Peninsula and a range of options around Goolwa and Port Elliot. Best Western motels are reliable and locally owned and can be found in Adelaide, Glenelg, Goolwa, Kingston, Robe, Mount Gambier, Kingscote, Renmark, Whyalla Norrie and Ceduna.
