Just Hangin' About The Rocks - Sydney’s Rocks Area
It's a short walk from Circular Quay to The Rocks, an area once overcrowded and squalid, back when the first non-Aboriginal settlement was there. Today, many of those original buildings remain (warehouses, pubs and houses), but it's an entirely different atmosphere. Parts of it are 'touristy' with souvenir shops and boutiques but, on the whole, it's a charming spot to wander and enjoy.
Cadman's Cottage (1816) is Sydney's oldest house. It's near the Sydney Visitor Centre just off Circular Quay. You can pick up a map of the Rocks here for a dollar to help you find your way.
Scattered around are 101 green plaques denoting historic people and places, like the first execution at the corner of Essex and Harrington streets. Thomas Barrett was hanged in 1788 for stealing peas, pork and butter. Prison wasn't an alternative as he'd just arrived in one big one. The gallows tree separated the men’s and women’s camps, and the nearby pub had a viewing window to watch the hangings - after all, they didn't have SkySport.
