Destinations
: Tasmania
When I started writing this guide, I decided that it would be
personal and that I would consciously try to avoid brochure-type
clichés. Then I came to Tasmania, and well …
Tasmania is an island with a fascinating history and heritage,
dramatic and beautiful landscapes, a spectacular wilderness, full
of wildlife and wildflowers, and is home to an array of quality
accommodation, and wonderful food and wine.
So, there you go.
Hobart - Laid
back, historic and charming
Tasmania’s capital sits below Mt Wellington on the shores
of the Derwent River. It’s a relaxed city with warm sandstone buildings,
graceful old trees, heritage parks and gardens, and spinnakers and
clinking masts on the water.

Southeast
- The penal peninsula
A visit to this region is a must if you want scenery, wildlife,
heritage and adventure. North-east first, and then south of Hobart
is the Tasman Peninsula, home to the historic and haunting Port
Arthur penal settlement. There are charming towns along the way,
like Richmond. The Huon Trail is an extremely pretty area with pine-fringed
rivers, dark forests and sparkling seas.

How Green Is My Valley?
North-west of Hobart is the Derwent Valley, home to hop
fields, orchards, lovely villages and old oast-houses. The Lyell
Highway is known as ‘The Wild Way’ and follows the course of the
Derwent River past poplars and willows, towards Tasmania’s mountains
and wilderness.

For nature lovers, no visit to Tasmania would be complete
without seeing some of the west, whether by plane, boat, car or
on foot. There is simply nowhere like this area anywhere in the
world - fragrant pine and dense rainforests, mighty rivers, spectacular
waterfalls, a wild coast, reflective lakes and harbours,
and a pioneering history.

- King and Flinders
Many visitors to Tasmania simply don’t have time to get
to the other islands but they have plenty to offer - Flinders Island
for bushwalking, swimming, snorkelling or diving; King Island for

and the crispest, clean air.
