Tasmania : Tasmania Accommodation

Hobart

There are accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets. One property I like is the Lenna of Hobart. In a good location (Battery Point) it has elegance and charm, being a restored National Trust colonial home, and has modern rooms as well as being home to Alexander’s, one of Hobart’s best restaurants.

There are cottages and B & Bs throughout Tassie that have ambience and charm, like Piermont Retreat in Swansea and, for mine, no trip to Tasmania should be without a trip to Port Arthur - it’s only an hour and a bit from Hobart so it’s an easy day trip but if you want to stay overnight (the ghost tour perhaps) the Chancellor Inn (was the Fox and Hounds) is a comfortable and friendly place to stay.

Launceston

There are many excellent accommodation properties in Launceston from motels to boutique style. Even some of the motels have character, like The Old Bakery Inn. The Edwardian (lovely restored terraces) is good value and owner Nick has in-depth knowledge of what to do and see in Tassie as well as a finely honed sense of humour and the ridiculous. The Launceston Country Club and Casino is a nice resort where you can have a round of golf, a horse ride and a flutter staying in quality accommodation.

Freycinet

There’s accommodation in and around Bicheno and Coles Bay to suit all tastes and budgets, but if you can splurge a bit, I recommend Freycinet Lodge for luxury accommodation that sits comfortable within the natural surroundings. They often put together packages that can include boat trips, 4WD and walking excursions, camping under the stars, massages and wine tastings.

Cradle Mountain

Another one of nature’s gems and you can do it in style at Cradle Mountain Lodge or with a lighter budget, just up the road at Cradle Mountain Wilderness Village. Either way you’ll have wallabies, wombats and possums on your doorstep. Nearby Lemonthyme Lodge is also a treat for a couple of nights - secluded, excellent accommodation in a wonderful natural setting. There’s more on Freycinet, Cradle Mountain and Lemonthyme here.

Other Areas

As mentioned, Tasmania has a range of quality accommodation wherever you go - like the Strahan Village in Strahan who has accommodation from budget to well, not budget (base for exploring the South West Wilderness). If looking for comfortable, well-priced overnight accommodation, I like Best Western properties. While it is a chain, these properties are locally owned, have individual style, are friendly and have amenities like swimming pool, TV, restaurant etc at a good price (many around $100 per room per night). There are Best Western properties in Hobart, Bicheno, Scarmander, Launceston, Deloraine, Ulverstone, Burnie, Poatina and Queenstown.
