Destinations
: Victoria
Queen Victoria drew and painted all her life, recalling her visits
to the opera and ballet in sketches and her surroundings in watercolours
- the heather purples and mauves of her ‘dear Highland Hills’ around
Balmoral, the green trees of Windsor or the golden haze over the
Solent where she dabbled from the Alcove at Osborne in summer. She
would have felt at home in the State named after her.
Melbourne
- A polished gem
Melbourne is a stylish, multicultural city. In many ways
it's the antithesis of Sydney. Sydney swaggers, brash and cheeky,
with a post-Olympic smugness. Melbourne is reserved and cultured.
Sydney is flash and Melbourne is grand. Sydney has convict origins;
Melbourne sprang from wealthy settlers and the gold rush. Sydney
sprawled into existence without any great plan; Melbourne is orderly
and grid-like at its centre. Perhaps this explains the friendly
rivalry between the two cities.

Yarra Valley, Dandenongs & Mornington
- An hour and a lifestyle away
While the Yarra Valley & Dandenongs is regarded as a region
in itself in most guidebooks, it’s only an hour from Melbourne making
it a great day trip or a weekend away. Terrific wineries, restaurants,
cafes, gardens, galleries and charming villages are just part of
this gateway to the alpine country.

Great Ocean Road
- A road. By the ocean. Great!
The Great Ocean Road, skirting the coastline from Geelong
to Nelson on the South Australian border, is without doubt one of
Australia’s great scenic drives. It’s also a tribute to the determination
of soldiers who returned from World War I and, with picks and shovels,
built the road to commemorate their comrades who died in the war.

Goldfields
- An easy place to pan
Victoria struck it rich in the 1850s with the discovery
of gold at Bendigo and Ballarat. The fields around these historic
towns were easily the richest in Australia, and made the State the
most affluent in the country.

High Country
- On the piste
Victoria's alpine region is a major winter-sports area and
an extremely scenic spot. Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Mt Buffalo and Falls
Creek provide very good downhill skiing and snowboarding. The resorts
are accessible by road, mostly sealed, though it is essential to
carry snow chains in winter. These can be hired en-route, from petrol
stations or at the resorts. All resorts, and several stores in Melbourne,
hire a full range of clothing and equipment for skiers and snowboarders.

Grampians
- Take a hike
The hugely popular Grampians National Park sits in the centre
of the western half of Victoria. The Grampians are a series of stark
and spectacular sandstone ridges, eroded into bizarre shapes, and
famous for brilliant wildflowers in spring.

The Murray
- All the rivers run
The Murray River is a great waterway and, apart from a short,
straight line drawn by man joining it to the sea in the east, the
river forms the border between Victoria and New South Wales for
more than 2000 kilometres.

Gippsland
- Up for Sale
Gippsland is a very large area to the east and south of
Melbourne. The Princes Highway follows an inland route through the
La Trobe Valley, the heart of Victoria's coal mining, gas, electricity
and heavy industrial area. The South Gippsland Highway follows an
almost coastal route through magnificent rolling hills with occasional
ocean glimpses.
